ALL TOGETHER (Acts 2) – UNSTOPPABLE – Week 2

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Acts 2:1-4 ESV

42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Acts 2:42-47 ESV

The Day of Pentecost is….

A FULFILLMENT OF THE PROMISE BY JESUS

“And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 1:4-5

1- ALL TOGETHER FILLED

Acts 2:1

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.”

Acts 2:2

“2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.”

Acts 2:3

3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

Acts 2:4

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Tongues means a variety of languages, not different dialects of a few languages. The Holy Spirit was enabling them to praise God and tell of His wonderful works in languages they never had spoken in before. These are languages that are represented of people who are in Jerusalem.

With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, it started the work of breaking down the walls of nationalities and prejudices!

What does it mean for us?

It means that we are part of the last days and God is pouring out his Spirit on all flesh, or all mankind.

Spirit-Baptism is for us today!

Common Misconceptions

  • “If I’ve not experienced the baptism in the Holy Spirit something is wrong with me/I’m a second-class Christian/I’m not as spiritual as those who are/…”
  • Spirit-baptism is only for certain people.
  • Spirit-baptism was only for a certain time period.

TRUTHS ABOUT SPIRIT BAPTISM

  1. Spirit baptism is primarily vocational in purpose and result.
  2. Speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence of Spirit baptism.

2- ALL TOGETHER DEVOTED

42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Verses 42-47 is the result of what happened after the baptism in the Holy Spirit… it’s the community life and results…

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is just the beginning…

  1. SPIRITUAL GROWTH

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching… (43)”And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.”

Acts 2:42-43 ESV

Spiritual growth is vital to a believer.

2- FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship means much more than just “were together.”

They lived it out…They knew what was going on and meeting needs in each other’s lives…

3 – MISSION

“praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Acts 2:47 ESV

Spirit Baptism not about salvation, or sanctification, it’s about service.

We miss the true meaning of Acts 2 if we just define it as the birth of the church. Spirit Baptism launched the mission of the disciples rather than creating the church.

The ultimate result was they were about the mission of what they were empowered to do! Let’s not just regulate Spirit Baptism to a spiritual blessing that’s just about prayer gatherings or worship services.

It’s a gift with a responsibility to you and me about reaching our city, region and the world.

Verse 47 states the disciples were “having favor with all the people.” Followers of Jesus were impacting their city by embracing the life and teaching of Jesus.

They were having favor with everyone in the city!

Verse 47 ends by declaring, “And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”.” Through the disciples’ courage, faith, good works, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, God added to the church daily. The kingdom was growing!

APPLICATION –

What is our community seeing and hearing of us – individually and collectively as the result of Spirit Baptism?

What are we most known for?

What are we doing for them to “see and hear” as witnesses of Jesus?
